a.P.A.t.T. + GongMan (DJ set) – 7 March 25 (cancelled)
*** We are heartbroken to learn that our wonderful partner venue, The Dorothy Pax, is closing its doors for the final time on Weds 5th March 2025. Richard, Briony and the team at the Pax have worked tirelessly in support of Sheffield’s music scene, creating one of the most unique and characterful spaces for small scale performances in the city. However, the confluence of rising costs, both for businesses and for us as audience members, has made their continuing existence unviable despite their best efforts.
Sadly that means that this planned event with a.P.A.t.T. and GongMan can no longer go ahead on 7th March. The financial support that the Dorothy Pax has given to our recent run of events has been vital and has allowed us to offer extraordinarily high quality music to you all for free – how lucky we have been!! We’ve enjoyed so many great performances in this space, from Arch Garrison, Emily Jones and little robots in 2019, through to William D Drake, Stephen EvEns and Kugelschreiber over the past 6 months.
We hope you will join us in sending your love and gratitude to the Dorothy Pax team for all that they have done and have tried to do in support of Sheffield’s cultural life and in support of the country’s live music scene. THANK YOU HEROES 🙌 ***
Listen up, you glorious people! Joining us on Friday 7th March 2025 for the fourth in our series of events at The Dorothy Pax in Sheffield are the bonkers brilliant a.P.A.t.T.
Cast off the frissons of the everyday; destroy the humdrum dirge with superlative sounds that reassemble the all-pervasive drone of cultural miasma into new and unexpected shapes. All of this, for you, LIVE in Sheffield, in March 2025!
But, well, who are a.P.A.t.T.? Liverpool based a.P.A.t.T. are an ensemble generally known for their avant-garde music and multimedia exploits.
Since their first release (e.P.) in 2002, they have released more than 7 albums, numerous singles, and endless music videos and short films. They have received commissions from a smörgåsbord of leading arts organisations, made a full feature film and even starred and composed for a BBC TV Sitcom. Because, of course.
a.P.A.t.T.’s latest album ‘We’ (2023) – their first since 2016’s acclaimed Fun With Music – resumes their sublime/ridiculous directive with aplomb. It was album of the month and made ‘album of the year’ listings in The Quietus, who said:
“A postmodern take on the notion, however, might include some of the more maddening aspects of modern existence – advertisements and radio jingles, disembodied snippets of movie dialogue, audible incursions of other people’s music on public transport. This is not so much attention deficit music as attention intensive music which rewards time spent with it, particularly for listeners whose taste remains relatively fluid.”
“There really is no other way to say this: but a.P.A.t.T. drive me completely and utterly cuckoo, in a decidedly good way of course.”Louder Than War
Providing your auditory entertainment before and after the show will be GongMan (All Hail Hyena‘s all important hype machine). Greg was the orchestrator of the Whole World Window pre-show events that many of us enjoyed last autumn before the Cardiacs family Sing to Tim gigs, as well as previous Whole World Window mini-festivals, compilations and fundraisers. Looking forward to hearing his selections!

This is a free entry gig, but the Pax is a small venue with limited space so this time we’re going to ask people to BOOK A PLACE so that the team there can prepare accordingly. Here’s how it’s going to work:
You pay a £5 deposit to secure your place at the gig. This means you’re guaranteed entry.
On arrival the Dorothy Pax team will check you in and issue you with a £5 bar token.
You buy your first lot of drinks from the bar with your token (it’s usable only once).
We pass a bucket around at the end of the show for you to show your appreciation for our artists and help them cover their costs (100% of the money in the bucket goes to the band)
Under 18s are welcome until 9pm and must be accompanied by an adult.
Accessibility: The Dorothy Pax is a canalside bar which is reached by a 5 min walk from the nearest road (Furnival Rd), or a very short walk from the multistorey car park (disabled bays available) that has a pedestrian exit directly on to the quays. The pavement surface around Victoria Quays is cobbled and uneven. Inside, the bar has a small mezzanine / balcony area at ground level, with 10 steps down to reach the bar and the toilets (two large gender neutral cubicles).
